Kinetoscope Film Sculptures at Newstead Abbey – Part of the #FOREST Season
The Kinetoscope film sculptures are now installed in the beautiful parkland of Newstead Abbey, as part of the #FOREST season, thanks to an invitation from curator Abi Spinks.
Over the past few months, Matt Little (Re-innovation) and I have been working to refurbish the Kinetoscopes, which had spent around five years in the landscape—first for 2 years at @ntshugborough and then approximately 3 years at @dudmastonnt.
We’ve brought them back to life using ultra-low-power digital technology, and re-scanned the original film reels that had weathered the elements and been played tens of thousands of times through the mechanical projector units.
Here are some images from the installation last week. The sculptures are now in situ at Newstead Abbey and will remain in the landscape for the rest of 2025.

Visitors can take an interactive journey into the forest by seeking out the three Kinetoscope film sculptures placed along a scenic walking route through the Newstead Abbey gardens.
